Frumentius of Ethiopia

Saint Frumentius, Archbishop of Abyssinia, enlightener of Ethiopia.

Saint Frumentius was a native of Tyre who, as a boy, was shipwrecked on the coast of Ethiopia with his brother Edesius and taken into the service of the king. Gaining influence at court, he encouraged the spread of Christianity in the country.

He later went to Alexandria, where Saint Athanasius consecrated him bishop for Ethiopia. He returned to baptize the king and people, and reposed in the fourth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Frumentius of Ethiopia is commemorated on November 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 13 of the civil calendar.
