James the Ascetic

Venerable James the Ascetic of Porphyreon, who repented of grave sin.

St. James lived as a hermit near Porphyreon in Phoenicia in the sixth century and was granted the gift of healing. Tradition relates that he fell into grave sin and, despairing, nearly abandoned his repentance, but was restored through counsel and years of penance in a tomb, and again received the grace of God.

He is commemorated on January 28.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, James the Ascetic is commemorated on January 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 10 of the civil calendar.
