Holy Virgin-Martyr Markella of Chios.
St. Markella was a young virgin of the island of Chios, honored by tradition as a martyr of purity. Raised in the faith by a devout mother whom she lost early, she lived in prayer and modesty. When her own father, given over to sinful passion, pursued her, she fled; refusing to yield, she was put to death by his hand and received the crown of martyrdom.
At the place of her martyrdom on Chios a shrine and holy spring bear her memory, and many pilgrims seek her intercession there. She is the patroness of Chios, and her feast is kept on July 22.

On the New Calendar, Markella of Chios is commemorated on July 22. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 4 of the civil calendar.
