Savvas of Kalymnos

Venerable Savvas the New of Kalymnos, iconographer and confessor.

St. Savvas the New was born in Thrace in 1862 and became a monk on Mount Athos and in the Holy Land, where he practiced iconography and lived in great austerity. Returning to Greece, he became the spiritual father of St. Nektarios of Aegina and, after his elder's repose, settled at the convent of All Saints on the island of Kalymnos.

There he served the nuns and the islanders with love until his repose in 1948; his relics were found incorrupt. His memory is kept on March 29 and also on the fifth Sunday of Great Lent.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Savvas of Kalymnos is commemorated on March 29. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 11 of the civil calendar.
