  Synaxis of the Holy Apostles

  Great Feast, Σύναξις Αποστόλων

  On the day after the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, the Church celebrates in one synaxis the Twelve Apostles of Christ. Chosen by the Lord to be with Him and to be sent out to preach, they received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and carried the Gospel to the ends of the known world, nearly all of them sealing their witness with martyrdom.

• Meliton the Martyr

  Martyr, Μελίτων

  Saint Meliton is remembered in the synaxaria as a martyr who confessed Christ during the persecutions and gave his life for the faith. The details of his contest have not been preserved.

• Peter of Sinope

  Martyr, Πέτρος ο εκ Σινώπης

  Saint Peter came from Sinope on the Black Sea and, tradition relates, was put to death for his confession of Christ. The synaxaria commemorate him on the day of the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles.

• Peter, Prince of the Horde

  Saint, Πέτρος ο Πρίγκιπας του Ορντύνσκ

  Saint Peter was a nephew of the khan of the Golden Horde who was moved by the preaching of Saint Cyril, bishop of Rostov, and received baptism. He settled in Rostov, where tradition relates that the Apostles Peter and Paul appeared to him and he founded a monastery in their honour. He took the monastic habit before his repose in 1290.
