  September 1, Martyr, Αγίες Σαράντα Παρθενομάρτυρες

  The 40 Holy Virgins were ascetic women of Thrace who, with their teacher Ammon the Deacon, confessed Christ during the persecution under Licinius in the early fourth century. Refusing to sacrifice to idols, they endured imprisonment and torture with their teacher, and received together the crown of martyrdom at Heraclea in Thrace.

  Holy Theophano was the first wife of the emperor Leo the Wise in the ninth century. Amid the splendour and the sorrows of the palace she lived in prayer, fasting and almsgiving, sleeping on the floor and giving her wealth to the poor.
