Bishop Aidan of Lindisfarne.
St. Aidan was an Irish monk of the monastery of Iona who in the seventh century was sent at the request of King Oswald to evangelize the kingdom of Northumbria in northern England. Consecrated bishop, he made his seat on the island of Lindisfarne, from which he traveled on foot through the countryside, preaching Christ with gentleness, ransoming captives, and giving to the poor whatever he received.
His humility and charity won the hearts of the people, and Lindisfarne became a great center of prayer and mission. He reposed in 651 and is commemorated on August 31.
