Athanasios of Attaleia

New Martyr Athanasios of Attaleia, martyred in Smyrna.

St. Athanasios was born in Attaleia in Asia Minor and lived in Smyrna. Tradition relates that after being accused of having spoken words of conversion to Islam, he refused to abandon the Christian faith and was beheaded in Smyrna in 1700.

He is commemorated on January 7.
