Boisil of Melrose

Venerable Boisil, Abbot of Melrose in Scotland, teacher of St. Cuthbert.

St. Boisil was prior and later abbot of the monastery of Melrose in the seventh century, renowned for his holiness and his gift of prophecy. He received the young St. Cuthbert into the monastery and was his teacher.

He foretold his own death from the plague and reposed in peace, having spent his last days reading the Gospel of John with his disciple.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Boisil of Melrose is commemorated on February 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 9 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
