Demetrios of Philadelphia, New Martyr

New Martyr Demetrios of Philadelphia in Asia Minor, beheaded for Christ in the seventeenth century.

Saint Demetrios came from Philadelphia in Asia Minor. Tradition relates that as a young man he was pressured to renounce his faith and, after a fall, returned to Christ with repentance and confessed Him openly before the Turkish judge. He was beheaded in 1657 and is counted among the New Martyrs.

On the New Calendar, Demetrios of Philadelphia, New Martyr is commemorated on June 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 15 of the civil calendar.
