Elias the Cave-dweller and Arsenios

Venerable Elias the Cave-dweller of Calabria and his disciple Arsenios.

St. Elias the Cave-dweller was born at Reggio in Calabria in the ninth century and embraced the ascetic life in the caves of southern Italy, then part of the Byzantine world, together with his companion Arsenios. He was known for his humility, his gift of discernment, and the many disciples he guided.

He reposed in the early tenth century and is commemorated with Arsenios on September 11.

On the New Calendar, Elias the Cave-dweller and Arsenios is commemorated on September 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 24 of the civil calendar.
