George of Cernica

Venerable George of Cernica, restorer of monastic life in Romania.

Venerable George was born in Transylvania in the eighteenth century and became a disciple of St. Paisius Velichkovsky on Mount Athos and in Moldavia. He was sent to restore the abandoned monastery of Cernica near Bucharest, where he gathered a large brotherhood and established the hesychast tradition of his teacher. He reposed in peace in 1806 and is honoured by the Church of Romania.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, George of Cernica is commemorated on December 3. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 16 of the civil calendar.
