James of Catania

Saint James the Confessor, Bishop of Catania.

St. James was a monk of the Studion monastery who became Bishop of Catania in Sicily in the ninth century. For his defense of the holy icons during the second iconoclast persecution he was subjected to hunger, imprisonment and exile.

He reposed in exile, and the Church honors him as a confessor on March 21.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, James of Catania is commemorated on March 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 3 of the civil calendar.
