Kosmas of Zographou

Venerable Kosmas the Bulgarian, hermit of Zographou on Mount Athos.

St. Kosmas was a Bulgarian nobleman who fled a worldly marriage to become a monk at the monastery of Zographou on Mount Athos, where he served as ecclesiarch before withdrawing to a cave in solitude. Tradition relates that he was granted visions of the Mother of God and the gift of discernment.

He reposed in 1323 and is commemorated on September 22.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Kosmas of Zographou is commemorated on September 22. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 5 of the civil calendar.
