Maximos of Jerusalem

Saint Maximos the Confessor, Bishop of Jerusalem, who bore the marks of persecution into his episcopate.

Maximos confessed Christ during the persecution of Maximian and, according to tradition, lost an eye and the use of a leg under torture. Surviving the persecution, he became Bishop of Jerusalem in the fourth century and took part in the Council of Nicaea.

He was a friend and defender of Saint Athanasios and reposed in peace around the year 350.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Maximos of Jerusalem is commemorated on May 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 22 of the civil calendar.
