Nicholas the Grocer of Karpenisi

New Martyr Nicholas the grocer of Karpenisi, martyred in Constantinople.

St. Nicholas was a youth of Karpenisi who worked in his father's grocery in Constantinople. Tradition relates that a Turkish teacher, to whom he went for lessons, tricked him into pronouncing the Muslim confession and then denounced him; before the judge Nicholas denied that he had ever left Christ.

He was beheaded in 1672, at the age of fifteen, and is commemorated on September 23.

On the New Calendar, Nicholas the Grocer of Karpenisi is commemorated on September 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 6 of the civil calendar.
