Thirteen Monastic Martyrs of Kantara

The Thirteen Venerable Martyrs of the Kantara Monastery in Cyprus, burned by the Latins for refusing to alter the faith.

John, Konon and eleven fellow monks of the Monastery of the Theotokos at Kantara in Cyprus refused to accept the Latin teaching on unleavened bread when the island was under Frankish rule. After three years of imprisonment and beatings they were dragged through the streets of Nicosia and burned.

They suffered in 1231 and are honored by the Church of Cyprus on May 19.

On the New Calendar, Thirteen Monastic Martyrs of Kantara is commemorated on May 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 1 of the civil calendar.
