Alexander of Kushta

Venerable Alexander, abbot of Kushta in Vologda, a hermit of the Russian north.

Saint Alexander was a monk of the Savior-Stone monastery on Lake Kubensk who withdrew to the river Kushta in the forests of Vologda and founded a monastery there in the fifteenth century. He was known for his humility and love of solitude, and reposed in 1439.

On the New Calendar, Alexander of Kushta is commemorated on June 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 22 of the civil calendar.
