Cyril of White Lake

Venerable Cyril, founder and abbot of the monastery of White Lake (Belozersk), a great father of Russian monasticism.

Saint Cyril was born in Moscow in 1337 and became a monk of the Simonov monastery, where he knew Saint Sergius of Radonezh. Guided, tradition relates, by a vision of the Theotokos, he went north to the shore of White Lake and founded the monastery that bears his name.

He was renowned for humility, strict community life and gifts of prophecy and healing, and he reposed in 1427. His monastery became one of the greatest in Russia.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cyril of White Lake is commemorated on June 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 22 of the civil calendar.
