Andrew of Crete the Monk-Martyr

Holy Monk-Martyr Andrew of Crete, slain in Constantinople for the holy icons.

Andrew was a monk of Crete who, hearing of the iconoclast persecution of Constantine Copronymus, went to Constantinople and rebuked the emperor to his face in the church of Saint Mamas.

He was scourged and dragged through the streets, and died from his wounds around 767; his body was cast into a pit at the place called Krisis, whence his name.

On the New Calendar, Andrew of Crete the Monk-Martyr is commemorated on October 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 30 of the civil calendar.
