Athanasius of Methoni

Athanasius, Bishop of Methoni in the Peloponnese.

Athanasius was born in Catania in Sicily in the ninth century and, when his family fled the Arab invasions to the Peloponnese, he became a monk at Patras and was later made Bishop of Methoni. He shepherded his flock in humility and reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Athanasius of Methoni is commemorated on December 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 23 of the civil calendar.
