  Menas, Hermogenes and Eugraphus

  Martyr, Μηνάς

  The holy martyrs Menas, Hermogenes, and Eugraphus suffered at Alexandria in the early fourth century. Menas, called the Melodious for his eloquence, was sent to the city on imperial business and openly preached Christ there; Hermogenes, sent to judge him, was won to the faith by his endurance and the grace shown in him, and Eugraphus, the companion of Menas, confessed Christ with them. All three were put to death by beheading.

• Thomas of Bithynia

  Venerable, Θωμάς ο Δεφουρκινός

  Venerable Thomas was a monk of Bithynia in the tenth century who lived for many years in solitude near the monastery of Defourkinos. Tradition relates that the emperor Leo the Wise sent him a sealed letter with questions, and that the saint answered them without opening the seal, so great was his gift of discernment.

• Gemellus of Paphlagonia

  Martyr, Γέμελλος

  The holy martyr Gemellus was a Christian of Paphlagonia who openly rebuked the emperor Julian the Apostate at Ancyra. Tradition relates that he was tortured and finally crucified for Christ, ending his life on the cross like his Master.

• Theotecnus, Marianus and Eugene

  Martyr, Θεότεκνος, Μαριανός και Ευγένιος

  The holy martyrs Theotecnus, Marianus and Eugene are commemorated together on this day. The Synaxarion records that they confessed Christ and were perfected by the sword.

• Athanasius of Methoni

  Hierarch, Αθανάσιος Μεθώνης

  Athanasius was born in Catania in Sicily in the ninth century and, when his family fled the Arab invasions to the Peloponnese, he became a monk at Patras and was later made Bishop of Methoni. He shepherded his flock in humility and reposed in peace.
