Conception of the Theotokos by Anne
Great Feast, Σύλληψη Θεοτόκου υπό Άννης
On December 9 the Church commemorates the conception of the Most Holy Theotokos by the righteous Anna. Childless for many years, Joachim and Anna prayed with tears, and according to tradition an angel announced to each of them that God would grant them a child who would be spoken of in all the world. Anna conceived and bore Mary, the future Mother of God.
Hannah the Prophetess
Holy Woman, Άννα η Προφήτις
Righteous Hannah was the wife of Elkanah and for many years was childless. Praying in tears at the sanctuary of Shiloh, she vowed to give her son to the Lord, and God granted her the prophet Samuel, whom she brought to serve before the Ark. Her song of thanksgiving is sung by the Church as the third ode of the canon.
Stephen the New Light
Venerable, Στέφανος ο Νεολαμπής
Venerable Stephen, called the New Light, was a monk of Constantinople in the tenth century. Tradition relates that he lived in extreme asceticism, enclosed in a narrow cell near the church of St. Antipas, taking almost no food, and that he reposed in peace after many years of such labour.
Narses, Isaac and Sositheus
Martyr, Ναρσής, Ισαάκ και Σωσίθεος
The holy martyrs Narses, Isaac and Sositheus are remembered together on this day. Narses suffered in Persia for refusing to worship the sun; tradition records that all three confessed Christ and were perfected by the sword.
