Hannah the Prophetess

Righteous Hannah the Prophetess, mother of the Prophet Samuel.

Righteous Hannah was the wife of Elkanah and for many years was childless. Praying in tears at the sanctuary of Shiloh, she vowed to give her son to the Lord, and God granted her the prophet Samuel, whom she brought to serve before the Ark. Her song of thanksgiving is sung by the Church as the third ode of the canon.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Hannah the Prophetess is commemorated on December 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 22 of the civil calendar.
