  Daniel the Stylite

  Venerable, Δανιήλ ο Στυλίτης

  Venerable Daniel the Stylite was a monk of the fifth century who, inspired by the example of St. Symeon the Stylite, took his stand upon a pillar near Constantinople and remained there in prayer for more than thirty years, enduring frost, wind, and burning heat. Emperors and patriarchs climbed to seek his counsel, and he came down only once, to defend the Orthodox faith in the capital.

• Luke the New Stylite

  Venerable, Λουκάς ο Νέος Στυλίτης

  Venerable Luke was a soldier who became a monk and priest in the tenth century. He took his stand upon a pillar near Chalcedon, where he lived in prayer and fasting for more than forty years, drawing many to repentance. He reposed in peace in the tenth century.

• Mirax of Egypt

  Martyr, Μείραξ

  The holy martyr Mirax was an Egyptian Christian who in his youth denied Christ and embraced the religion of the conquerors. Moved by the tears and prayers of his parents, he repented, openly confessed Christ before the ruler, and was beheaded. His story is told in the Synaxarion as an example of the power of repentance.

• Aithalas and Akepsimas

  Martyr, Αειθαλάς και Ακεψεής

  The holy martyrs Aithalas and Akepsimas are remembered together on this day. The Synaxarion records that they confessed Christ and were perfected by the sword; the Church also remembers on this day the martyrs Terence, Vincent, Aemilianus and Bebaia.

• Leontios of Achaia

  Venerable, Λεόντιος ο εν Αχαΐα

  Venerable Leontios was born in Monemvasia and became a monk on Mount Athos before withdrawing to a cave on the mountains of Achaia near Aigio, where he lived in stillness and prayer. He reposed in peace in the fifteenth century and is honoured at the monastery of the Taxiarchs there.

• Nikephoros Phokas

  Saint, Νικηφόρος Φωκάς

  Nikephoros Phokas was a Byzantine general who recovered Crete from the Arabs and reigned as emperor from 963. A friend of St. Athanasios the Athonite, he supported the founding of the Great Lavra on Mount Athos and lived with monastic austerity in the palace. He was murdered in 969 and is remembered by the Greek Synaxarion on this day.

  On this day the Church of Georgia gathers in one commemoration all the saints of its land, from St. Nina, Equal to the Apostles, and the early martyrs to the monastic fathers and the confessors of later centuries. The synaxis is also kept in the Greek calendar.
