Daniel the Stylite

Venerable Daniel the Stylite.

Venerable Daniel the Stylite was a monk of the fifth century who, inspired by the example of St. Symeon the Stylite, took his stand upon a pillar near Constantinople and remained there in prayer for more than thirty years, enduring frost, wind, and burning heat. Emperors and patriarchs climbed to seek his counsel, and he came down only once, to defend the Orthodox faith in the capital.

He reposed in extreme old age, revered by the whole city as an intercessor and guide. He is commemorated on December 11.

On the New Calendar, Daniel the Stylite is commemorated on December 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 24 of the civil calendar.
