Azat the Eunuch

Holy Martyr Azat the Eunuch, official of the Persian court, with those who suffered with him.

Azat was a favoured eunuch of the Persian court under King Shapur who confessed himself a Christian during the great persecution. Tradition relates that he was put to death together with a vast number of believers.

The king, grieved at the death of his servant, is said to have restrained the persecution thereafter.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Azat the Eunuch is commemorated on April 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 30 of the civil calendar.
