Zosimas of Solovki

Venerable Zosimas, abbot and co-founder of the Solovki Monastery in the White Sea.

Zosimas was a monk of the Russian north who, with Saint Herman, settled on the Solovki islands in the White Sea in the fifteenth century, on the site where Saint Sabbatius had lived before him. He built the first church there and became the first abbot of the community.

He guided the brotherhood through great hardship and reposed in 1478. Solovki became one of the great monasteries of Russia.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Zosimas of Solovki is commemorated on April 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 30 of the civil calendar.
