Bukolos of Smyrna

Bishop of Smyrna and disciple of John the Theologian.

St. Bukolos was a disciple of St. John the Theologian, who consecrated him the first Bishop of Smyrna in Asia Minor. In the earliest days of the Church he shepherded his flock amid the surrounding paganism with gentleness and wisdom, bringing many to the faith of Christ.

Before his peaceful repose he consecrated as his successor St. Polycarp, the future hieromartyr, thus handing on the apostolic faith he had received from the Beloved Disciple. He is commemorated on February 6.

On the New Calendar, Bukolos of Smyrna is commemorated on February 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 19 of the civil calendar.
