Venerable Chariton the Confessor.
St. Chariton was a Christian of Iconium who confessed Christ under torture during the persecutions of the third century, earning the title of Confessor. Released when the persecution abated, he withdrew to the desert of Judea, where he founded some of the earliest monastic communities of Palestine and guided many souls in the ascetic life.
He is honored as a father of Palestinian monasticism, whose lavras nurtured generations of desert saints. He is commemorated on September 28.
