Christopher of Antioch

Hieromartyr Christopher I, Patriarch of Antioch, murdered for his faith.

Christopher was a Christian official who was chosen Patriarch of Antioch in the tenth century while the city was under Muslim rule. He was respected for his justice and his care for the Christians of the region.

He was murdered in 967 by those who resented his defense of his flock and is honored as a hieromartyr.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Christopher of Antioch is commemorated on May 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 3 of the civil calendar.
