Cyril VI of Constantinople

Hieromartyr Cyril VI, Patriarch of Constantinople, hanged at Adrianople in 1821.

Cyril was born in Adrianople in the eighteenth century and served as Ecumenical Patriarch from 1810 to 1812, caring especially for the education of the clergy. After his resignation he lived quietly in his native city.

When the Greek revolution broke out in 1821 he was seized by the Ottomans and hanged at the gate of the cathedral of Adrianople. He is honoured as a hieromartyr of the Great Church.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Cyril VI of Constantinople is commemorated on April 18. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 1 of the civil calendar.
