John the Tailor of Ioannina

Holy New Martyr John of Ioannina, a tailor burned for Christ in Constantinople.

John was born in Ioannina in Epirus and worked as a tailor in Constantinople among Christians who had accepted Islam. Pressed by them to do the same, he answered that he had been born a Christian and would die one.

After imprisonment and torture he was burned at Constantinople in 1526, and is honoured as the first of the new martyrs of Epirus.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John the Tailor of Ioannina is commemorated on April 18. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 1 of the civil calendar.
