Euthymios of Vatopedi and the Twelve Monks

Abbot Euthymios and twelve monks of Vatopedi, martyred for resisting the union with Rome.

St. Euthymios was abbot of the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos in the thirteenth century. When the Latinizing party under Michael VIII sought to impose the union with Rome on the Holy Mountain, he and twelve of his monks refused; tradition relates that he was drowned and the others hanged.

They are commemorated on January 4 as confessors of the Orthodox faith.

On the New Calendar, Euthymios of Vatopedi and the Twelve Monks is commemorated on January 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 17 of the civil calendar.
