Onouphrios the New of Hilandar

New Monk-Martyr Onouphrios of Hilandar, martyred on Chios in the nineteenth century.

St. Onouphrios was born in Bulgaria and became a monk at the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. Having once as a child spoken words of denial in anger, he sought to atone by open confession, and with the blessing of his elders went to Chios, where he was beheaded for Christ in 1818.

He is commemorated on January 4.

On the New Calendar, Onouphrios the New of Hilandar is commemorated on January 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 17 of the civil calendar.
