Gallus of Switzerland

Venerable Gallus, Irish missionary and hermit, enlightener of the Swiss.

Gallus was an Irish monk and companion of Saint Columbanus who preached among the pagans of the Lake Constance region. Remaining behind when Columbanus went to Italy, he lived as a hermit in the forest near the river Steinach.

He reposed around 640, and the great abbey of Saint Gall grew up on the site of his cell.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Gallus of Switzerland is commemorated on October 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 29 of the civil calendar.
