  Longinus the Centurion

  Martyr, Λογγίνος

  St. Longinus was the centurion who stood guard at the Cross of Christ and, beholding the darkness and the earthquake, confessed: truly this was the Son of God. Tradition holds that he was also among the guards at the tomb, and that having become a believer he left the army and preached Christ in his native Cappadocia.

  Martyr, Λεόντιος, Δομέτιος, Τερέντιος και Δομνίνος

  These four martyrs are commemorated together in the Synaxarion of this day. Tradition relates that they confessed Christ before the pagan authorities and were beheaded.

• Malos the Hermit

  Venerable, Μαλός

  Malos lived as a hermit in the wilderness, where he attained such purity of life that, tradition relates, he was given the grace of working miracles.

• John of Tourkolekas

  Martyr, Ιωάννης ο Τουρκολέκας

  John was born in the village of Tourkolekas in Messenia in the early nineteenth century, into a family of klephts of the Peloponnese. Taken captive by the Turks as a boy with his father, he was pressed to deny Christ and accept Islam.

• Longinus the Gatekeeper

  Venerable, Λογγίνος ο φύλακας της θύρας

  Longinus served for many years as gatekeeper of the Kiev Caves Lavra, fulfilling his humble obedience with unceasing prayer. Tradition relates that he received the gift of discernment, knowing the thoughts of those who entered and left the monastery.

• Gallus of Switzerland

  Venerable, Γάλλος

  Gallus was an Irish monk and companion of Saint Columbanus who preached among the pagans of the Lake Constance region. Remaining behind when Columbanus went to Italy, he lived as a hermit in the forest near the river Steinach.
