New Monk-martyr Gideon of Karakalou, martyred at Tyrnavos.
The new martyr Gideon was born in Thessaly in the eighteenth century. As a boy he was forced into Islam, but he escaped and became a monk of the monastery of Karakalou on Mount Athos, where he lived for many years in repentance.
Returning to Thessaly to confess Christ, he was tortured and put to death at Tyrnavos in 1818.

On the New Calendar, Gideon of Karakalou is commemorated on December 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 12 of the civil calendar.
