Macarius of Moscow

Macarius, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia, compiler of the Great Menaion.

Macarius was Metropolitan of Moscow in the sixteenth century, in the reign of Ivan the Terrible. He gathered the lives of the saints and the writings of the Fathers into the Great Menaion, presided over the councils that glorified many Russian saints, and reposed in peace in 1563.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Macarius of Moscow is commemorated on December 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 12 of the civil calendar.
