Gregory of Alexandria

Saint Gregory the Confessor, Pope and Archbishop of Alexandria, who suffered under the iconoclasts.

Saint Gregory was Archbishop of Alexandria in the ninth century. When the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian summoned him to Constantinople and demanded that he reject the holy icons, he confessed the Orthodox faith.

He was imprisoned and exiled, and reposed as a confessor after three years in prison.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Gregory of Alexandria is commemorated on November 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 18 of the civil calendar.
