Jonah of Novgorod

Saint Jonah the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Novgorod.

Saint Jonah was Archbishop of Novgorod in the fifteenth century. Orphaned young, he was raised in piety and later became a monk and abbot before being chosen archbishop.

He was known for his care of the poor, his building of churches and monasteries, and his peacemaking between Novgorod and Moscow. He reposed in 1470.

On the New Calendar, Jonah of Novgorod is commemorated on November 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 18 of the civil calendar.
