St. Ignatius, Patriarch of Constantinople.

St. Ignatius was Patriarch of Constantinople in the ninth century. The son of an emperor, he was tonsured a monk in his youth after his father's fall from power, and rose by his virtue to the patriarchal throne, which he occupied twice amid the turbulence of imperial politics, suffering deposition and exile for his firmness.

He bore his trials with patience and forgiveness, and ended his days in peace, honored for his ascetic life and his steadfastness as a shepherd of the Church. He is commemorated on October 23.
