Makarios the Roman

Venerable Makarios the Roman, hermit of Mesopotamia.

Makarios, according to the account of three monks who found him, was a Roman who fled from his wedding feast to seek God and was led by an angel to a cave in the far wilderness of Mesopotamia.

There he lived in extreme asceticism for many years, guarded by two lions, and gave the wandering monks spiritual counsel before sending them home.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Makarios the Roman is commemorated on October 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 5 of the civil calendar.
