  Ignatius, Patriarch of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Ιγνάτιος

  St. Ignatius was Patriarch of Constantinople in the ninth century. The son of an emperor, he was tonsured a monk in his youth after his father's fall from power, and rose by his virtue to the patriarchal throne, which he occupied twice amid the turbulence of imperial politics, suffering deposition and exile for his firmness.

  James the Brother of the Lord

  James was the son of Joseph the Betrothed and is called the Brother of the Lord. He was chosen by the apostles as the first Bishop of Jerusalem, presided at the Apostolic Council, and composed the Epistle that bears his name and the earliest form of the Divine Liturgy.

  Makarios, according to the account of three monks who found him, was a Roman who fled from his wedding feast to seek God and was led by an angel to a cave in the far wilderness of Mesopotamia.

  Venerable, Πετρώνιος

  Petronios was a disciple of Saint Pachomios the Great in Egypt and was appointed by him to lead the community after his death. Tradition relates that he reposed in peace only a short time after his teacher, in the fourth century.

• Nikephoros the Venerable

  Venerable, Νικηφόρος

  Nikephoros is commemorated in the Synaxarion as a venerable father who lived in asceticism and reposed in peace. The details of his life are not preserved.
