  Abercius of Hieropolis

  Hierarch, Αβέρκιος

  St. Abercius was Bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia in the second century, called Equal-to-the-Apostles for his missionary zeal. He overthrew the idols of his city, brought multitudes to faith in Christ by his preaching and healings, and journeyed as far as Rome and the lands of the East, everywhere confirming the churches.

  Alexander was a bishop in the region of Adrianople who converted many pagans by his preaching. Brought before the governor, he refused to sacrifice to idols and was tortured.

  Abba Lot was a Desert Father of Egypt in the fifth century whose sayings are preserved in the Paradise of the Fathers. Best known is his exchange with Abba Joseph, who told him that if he wished, he could become all flame.

• Gregory of Methone

  Gregory was Bishop of Methone in the Peloponnese at the outbreak of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and blessed the struggle of his people. Tradition relates that he was seized by the forces of Ibrahim Pasha and killed for his faith and nation.
