Gregory of Methone

Holy Ethno-Hieromartyr Gregory, Bishop of Methone, who suffered in the Greek War of Independence.

Gregory was Bishop of Methone in the Peloponnese at the outbreak of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and blessed the struggle of his people. Tradition relates that he was seized by the forces of Ibrahim Pasha and killed for his faith and nation.

He is honored among the ethno-hieromartyrs of the Church of Greece.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Gregory of Methone is commemorated on October 22. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 4 of the civil calendar.
