  Hilarion the Great

  Venerable, Ιλαρίων

  St. Hilarion the Great was born near Gaza in Palestine at the end of the third century. Inspired by the example of St. Anthony the Great, whom he visited in the Egyptian desert, he took up the ascetic life in his homeland and became the father of monasticism in Palestine, drawing many disciples by his fasting, humility, and gift of wonderworking.

• Philotheos of Athos

  Venerable, Φιλόθεος ο Αγιορείτης

  Philotheos was born in 1526 at Elateia in Asia Minor and was taken captive with his brother by the Turks as a child; his mother, who had become a nun, later found and freed them. He became a monk at the monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos.

• John of Monemvasia

  Martyr, Ιωάννης ο εκ Μονεμβασίας

  John was born in 1758 in a village near Monemvasia, the son of a priest. In 1770 Albanian raiders killed his father and carried the boy and his mother into slavery in Larissa, where his Turkish master tried by every means to make him accept Islam.

• Christodoulos of Patmos (Translation of Relics)

  Venerable, Χριστόδουλος ο εν Πάτμω

  Christodoulos was born in Bithynia in the eleventh century and lived as a monk in Palestine, on Mount Latros and on Kos before receiving the island of Patmos from the emperor Alexios Komnenos in 1088. There he founded the monastery of Saint John the Theologian.

  Gaius, Dasius and Zotikos were Christians of Nicomedia who in the persecution of Diocletian destroyed a pagan temple. Seized and tortured, they refused to deny Christ.

  Ursula was, according to tradition, a British princess who with a company of virgins was martyred by the Huns at Cologne while returning from a pilgrimage to Rome. The Church honors her among the virgin martyrs of the West before the schism.
