Philotheos of Athos

Venerable Philotheos of Dionysiou, ascetic of Mount Athos.

Philotheos was born in 1526 at Elateia in Asia Minor and was taken captive with his brother by the Turks as a child; his mother, who had become a nun, later found and freed them. He became a monk at the monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos.

He lived for many years in fasting and silence in the wilderness of the Holy Mountain, gathered disciples, and reposed in peace in old age.

On the New Calendar, Philotheos of Athos is commemorated on October 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 3 of the civil calendar.
