Christodoulos of Patmos (Translation of Relics)

Translation of the relics of Venerable Christodoulos, founder of the Monastery of Saint John on Patmos.

Christodoulos was born in Bithynia in the eleventh century and lived as a monk in Palestine, on Mount Latros and on Kos before receiving the island of Patmos from the emperor Alexios Komnenos in 1088. There he founded the monastery of Saint John the Theologian.

He died on Euboea in 1093 after fleeing pirate raids; his relics were returned to Patmos, and the Church commemorates their translation on this day.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Christodoulos of Patmos (Translation of Relics) is commemorated on October 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 3 of the civil calendar.
