  Arethas of Najran

  Martyr, Αρέθας

  St. Arethas was the chief of the Christians of Najran in southern Arabia in the sixth century. When a persecutor seized the city and demanded that its people renounce Christ, the aged Arethas strengthened his fellow Christians in the faith, and with a great multitude of men, women, and children he was put to death around the year 523.

• Sebastiane the Martyr

  Holy Woman, Σεβαστιανή

  Sebastiane, according to tradition a disciple of the Apostle Paul, was brought before the governor Sergius at Marcianopolis in the reign of Domitian. She was cast into a furnace and thrown to wild beasts but was preserved unharmed.

  Mark, Soterichos and Valentine were Christians of Asia Minor who were arrested during the persecution of Diocletian. After torture they were tied to horses and dragged over rocks until they died.

• Akakios the Presbyter

  Hierarch, Ακάκιος ο Πρεσβύτερος

  Akakios was a priest who confessed Christ before the pagan authorities and was tortured for the faith. Tradition relates that he was beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

• The Holy Woman and her Infant

  Saint, Αγία Γυναίκα και το Βρέφος

  Among the Christians of Najran who suffered under the Jewish king Dhu Nuwas was a woman whose small child, tradition relates, cried out that he too was a Christian and asked to die with his mother.

• Arethas of the Kiev Caves

  Venerable, Αρέθας ο εν τω Σπηλαίω

  Arethas was a monk of the Kiev Caves who secretly hoarded wealth in his cell. When thieves stole it, he raged and blamed the innocent, until in a vision during illness he saw angels and demons contending for his soul.
